What Are the Signs of Demonic Oppression?
We know from Scripture that demonic activity is real and there should be no debate about that. As a Christian, I don’t believe you can be possessed by a demon. (I have written about that in another article.) However, that does not mean you cannot experience demonic oppression. Many who are true believers in Jesus Christ have experienced demonic oppression, and surprisingly some may have not even been aware that is what they were experiencing. As we consider this topic, it is helpful to identify the signs of demonic oppression so we are able to fight back. To be clear, I am looking at this from the perspective of a Christian facing oppression because those who are true followers of Christ have a different way of dealing with this than those who are not.
What is demonic oppression?
Before we identify the signs of demonic oppression, it makes sense to define exactly what it is. Demonic oppression is a spiritual attack from a demonic spirit which seeks to influence a person’s thoughts, emotions, and even their actions. Since a demon cannot possess a Christian to control them, then oppression is the next best option. Because of the way we are created as humans, these attacks will often begin in our mind because this is the central hub that dictates what we think about, how we feel, and ultimately what we do. The goal of demonic oppression is to keep a person trapped and bound. The desire is to paralyze the Christian believer so they become ineffective.
What are signs of demonic oppression?
To understand the signs of demonic oppression you must understand the way Satan operates because he is their leader, and they follow his cues. One of the challenges in identifying this is many times the areas of attack may not often appear demonic at all. In some instances, they can even mimic other conditions that may cause you to not consider the possibility of a demonic attack. In my years I have heard people share with me stories of sensing an evil spirit in their room or recognizing their presence. While those are forms that can be a little more overt, I want to address three signs of demonic oppression that are possible to overlook as attacks from the enemy:
1. Abnormal fear.
"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." - 1 Peter 5:8
Satan loves to operate in the realm of fear and intimidation. These are two of his greatest weapons and can be indicators of demonic oppression. This does not mean that if you are afraid, you are experiencing demonic oppression because we will all experience moments of fear at some point in our lives. You can begin to suspect demonic oppression is in play when this fear escalates beyond what is normal or usual. Remember, the attacks are often in our thoughts, which work their way into our emotions and actions. A person who is under attack in this way may shut themselves off from interactions with other people because of fear of the outcome, which often never materializes. To the outsider, this type of fear tends to look irrational, but to the person experiencing it, this feels very real. Again, I want to be clear: a person experiencing fear may not be facing demonic oppression, but if it escalates, that is something that must be considered.
2. Inability to rest and nightmares.
One of the things we must recognize in this spiritual battle that we face is Satan is often willing to play the long game. This means he has no problem extending an attack over a long period of time with the hopes of wearing you down. If you remember the story of Samson and Delilah, she was relentless in her pursuit of finding the source of his strength, and Samson eventually wore down. Another sign of demonic oppression is to attack a person’s ability to rest. This can be an attempt to attack your dreams or, again, cause you great fear and worry that prohibits rest. The reason this works is because without rest we become fatigued, and when we are tired, we are vulnerable. If you have ever watched a boxing match, sometimes the strategy of the opponent is to make the other fighter work hard in the early rounds so that by the time they get to the later rounds all their strength and energy are gone. When this happens, this can ultimately take away their opponent's will to fight. If there is a prolonged inability to rest, I mean, a real extended period, then you must consider demonic oppression. This can be especially true if the inability to rest cannot be justified by any circumstances that are happening in a person’s life. Should these signs appear, it is time to consider that you may be under attack.
3. Prolonged periods of unexplained depression.
As said earlier, demonic oppression is often an attack that begins in the mind. I am not a clinical psychologist so I want to choose my words carefully here, but there can be instances where depression can be a sign of demonic oppression. There are some people who have a clinical diagnosis of depression and have been treated successfully under a doctor’s care. However, in spiritual warfare, depression is one of the weapons of the enemy. Remember, the goal is to paralyze you and when depression sets in this can be a great paralyzer. However, this also calls for caution before you start diagnosing depression as a demonic attack. This may not be the first place you go, but if it persists over long periods of time, with no real understanding of why it is happening, then it is something that you cannot rule out either.
How do you overcome demonic oppression?
Regardless of the form it comes in, we must understand how to overcome this. I am a firm believer that spiritual battles require spiritual weapons, and thankfully, God has given them to us. As you search through the Scriptures, you will begin to see all God has provided so you can fight back against any type of demonic oppression (no matter which form it shows up in). I would turn your attention to Scriptures that talk about the armor of God, the power of God, the work of the Holy Spirit in you. As you begin to read these and internalize them, you will begin to see that God has equipped you and you do not have to be overcome by demonic oppression. Let me offer one scripture to encourage you:
"But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world." - 1 John 4:4
One thing you must realize is that if you are in Christ then the Holy Spirit lives in you. By this fact alone you now have dwelling inside you the Spirit of God which is greater than any demonic spirit that would try to oppress you. However, to fight back, you must know these things to be true, which means you must take God’s Word, study it, and apply it to your life. As you begin to do this, you will begin to grow stronger and more confident in who you are in Christ, and this can give you what you need to fight back against demonic oppression.
I know that demonic oppression is real, and it is not something that should be taken lightly. I also know that God is real, and he is greater than all. Most importantly, when you are in him then his authority is in you. Your responsibility is to take what he has given you and use it so that you can be victorious in every spiritual battle. Even if a demonic spirit tries to attack you, God has equipped you so you can overcome.
Difference Between Oppression and Possession
Oppression vs Possession
Oppression and possession are two classifications of demon influence and harassment toward human beings.
Demons are considered a form of evil spirits that can influence human beings in many ways. Although there are many non-believers about demons and their influences, many religions insist that these spirits can influence or cause disruptions to human lives and their faith.
In demonic oppression, the demon does not directly attack the person but influences his behavior and the person’s entire life. The person under demonic oppression might exhibit abnormal or changes in personality, attitude, and manners. Even with demonic influence, the person retains control over his physical body and mind.
On the other side, demonic possession is the state where the demon gains full command of a person’s body. The demon takes away the person’s ability to use his physical body, will, consciousness, and freedom. The body adopts the personality, voice, and actions of the demon. By using the person’s body, the demon communicates to other people by using a different voice and ways like shouting profanity and taunts.
Both demonic oppression and possession need a certain degree of latitude or “acceptance” into the human person’s body. For many religions and religious people, disobedience, committing sins, having temptations, participating in an occult religion, and a lack of faith are major reasons why demon oppression and possession happen.
Demonic oppression and possession can be remedied by doing repentance as well as purification of the body and soul. The most effective way to stop demonic influence is to reclaim faith and solidify belief with a strong will. These elements will help to battle the demon and other temptations. Exorcism, the process of forced extraction of an evil spirit from the body, is usually reserved for demon-possessed people. However, there is little evidence and accuracy regarding exorcism.
The exorcism is usually performed by a member of the clergy.
According to Christians, a believer and follower of Jesus Christ can be oppressed but cannot be possessed. This notion is founded on the belief that the Holy Spirit (one of the Holy Trinity) resides in a person’s body as its temple. This makes a Christian incorruptible and an exception to total demonic control.
Summary:
1. Demonic oppression and possession are two distinct types of demonic interaction. They both cause harassment and influence over a certain person.
2. Demonic oppression is defined as mild to heavy demonic harassment or influence. Meanwhile, demonic possession is characterized as full inhibition and control of evil spirits over the human body.
3. In demonic oppression, the person doesn’t lose his ability to move or control his body or mind. In demonic possession, on the other hand, the demon takes away the person’s volition including physical and mental capacities.
4. Demonic oppression is purely influence or subjugation of the person to the demon’s will. This can be done by suggestion or manipulation. On the other hand, demonic possession is the act where a demon controls a person’s body and mind. Therefore, in demonic oppression, the human will isn’t fully disabled. This is not the case in demonic possession.
5. Demonic possession is seen as more sensationalized than demonic oppression.
6. Both demonic oppression and possession happen inside a person’s body. However, demon-possessed people often communicates with other humans by using a demonic voice and manner.
7. There are many reasons why demonic oppression and possession happen. Most of the reasons are based on weak faith, disobedience to religion, and falling into sin.
8. In Christian teachings, a Christian can be oppressed but cannot be possessed. The Christian belief that a person’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit is the basis of this thinking.

Differences Between Devil and Demon
Name of Devil and Demon
In Scripture, Satan or Lucifer is the name of the devil. While “demon” is a word that came from the word daimon, which in Greek means “knowing”. The idea is they are more intellectual than humans. Ancient Greece has a word which means a powerful spirit, that is daimon. The word “demon” itself appeared on 63 instances in the New Testament. A Demon has many titles while the devil only has few, for example in Hebew it is called Asmodeus, in Avestan culture a demon is called Aesma-daeva, and in Islam it is called a Jinn. In the Christian Bible a demon is also called Azazel and Beelzebub. In other religions and belief systems, those names are demons separated from the devil while others state that these names are a semblance of devil.
Even when thought of as individual demons, some are often thought of being under the Devil’s direct control. This identifies only those thought of as the devil.
The devil is sometimes called Lucifer, particularly when describing him as an angel before his fall, although the reference inIsaiah14:12 to Lucifer, or the Son of the Morning, is a reference to a Babylonian king.
Beelzebubis originally the name of a Philistine god (more specifically a certain type of Baal, but is also used in the New Testament as a synonym for Satan.
Usage of both Devil and Demon
The word Devil is used in reference to the Satan, who belongs to a group of angels called cherubim.(Ezekiel 28:14). But when referring to a high-ranking, stronger demon, the word devil can be used also. The Devil can also be used when referring to a demon that leads a specific group. The Devil has greater evil than demons.
It must be remembered that the word daimon together with the word daimonion are both used as singular and plural in the Scripture specifically the New Testament, that’s demons and demon. But never they have been used in a manner that is interchanged with diabolos, the Devil because the fact is, there is only one Devil.

In broadest sense Demons act as Satan’s ambassador in order to do his plan to oppose the will of the Lord God Almighty. Satan has limited experiences as a creature because just like humans he is not the Creator, that is why demons extend the power of Satan. Sometimes we are deceived on thinking that Satan does it all (Ephesians 6:11-12).

Demons are less mischievous and evil than their superior devil, the reason for that will be the rank of the demons which is lower than devil.
Origin of Devil and Demon
Both the Devil and demons are creations of the Sovereign God, created for His purpose on showing His glory in the generations to come after He send His Son Jesus Christ to defeat the Devil once and for all at the Cross. The devil, is identified by the Holy Scripture as the creature personified as a serpent who made convincing effort to tempt Eve on disobeying the Almighty God and eat the fruit which God forbid to eat.
While demons are the heavenly hosts created by God originally as angels, then God purposed that those angels rebel and become condemned evil creatures known as demons. Christians regard demons as angels who was fallen because of their rebellion. Sometimes gods and goddesses of other belief systems and cultures are said to be “demons”.
Identification of Devil and Demon
The devil is identified as “the old serpent” and “the dragon” in The Revelation of Jesus Christ 12:9, 20:2 and also is identified as Satan. The devil is the person who is the enemy of the elect of God and the Lord God Himself. A high-ranking fallen, reprobate angel who was damned to become an evil creature. He is the superior of the angels who are condemned because of their rebellion. On the other hand, Demon was referred in the New Testament as the devil servant.
Nature of Devil and Demon
Devil is the supreme spirit of evil while demons are an evil supernatural being. While the term demon is used broadly in religion, literature, mythology, occultism, fiction and folklore.
When going back to the original Greek word of demons, we can get the meaning as “knowing” and we can see that it shows that demons are creatures with a higher intellect that mere humans. But this is only a conjecture.
In the religions of Ancient Near Eastern region and also in the traditions that originated from Abraham of the Bible, and that includes the Christian study of demons in the medieval or ancient times, they stated that demons are portrayed as the harmful creature, here in earth which causes humans to be possessed, and calls for exorcism. Demons are under the control of the Devil.
Role of Devil and Demon
In the Bible, the role of the Devil is more broad than the demons. The role of the demons can be seen specifically in writings of the Apostles and Disciples of Jesus in the Gospel, the Gospel of Mark in particular, Jesus is seen casting out a number of demons from those people with different kinds of illnesses. While the Devil’s work is found particularly in the Books of Ezekiel and Revelation, with some quotations of Apostle Paul in some of his Epistles.
Scripture states the existence of demons. There are many demons but there is only one Devil. Diabolos, meaning “slanderer” is the equivalent of the term “devil” in Greek language. Used as singular always, this word is associated with devil.
While demons are seen as plural when referred in the New Testament when Jesus condemned them.

Now, because other English language translation equates the Greek word for “demons” as “devils” the difference may not be implied at first and it makes confuses people. Demons are many but the Devil is only one.
In the Holy Scripture, An example of God’s sovereignty even in demons and devil is seen in 1 Samuel 16 and 18 when God sends evil creatures to possess Saul to mete punishment to him because he is not following the instructions of God. It shows God in his sovereignty, commanding and using demons for His purpose to happen.
Therefore demons and even the Devil are under the great Authority of the Living God. That is why the people of God is redeemed from the power of these evil creatures and secured in the Hands of the Living God because of what the Lord Jesus Christ has done and is doing right now.
