The Signature of God
The Signature of God
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. 1 PETER 5:6-7
They called my dad "Hook" because he was a left-handed pitcher who possessed a wicked curve ball. Hook also had great handwriting skills—his signature was absolutely magnificent. Unmistakable.
God has a signature that is unmistakable as well. He is at work in, around and through our lives. But I believe there are times when He does something very special to get our attention. My friend Joe Stowell, former president of Moody Bible Institute, calls these special acts "the signature of God."
Barbara and I have seen God's signature many times, usually when we were facing a major challenge and our faith was tested. One occurred shortly after we helped start FamilyLife in 1976. In our organization, we are responsible for raising our own financial support. It's simple: If the money doesn't come in, we don't get paid. At this particular time, challenges abounded everywhere—we had three young children, I was working long hours, and I was wounded by a decision made by my boss. Barbara and I felt like quitting.
But as we prayed, our thoughts kept returning to a letter we'd received a few weeks earlier. It contained a brief note and a check for our personal support: $5,000 from a couple we'd only met briefly, Ad and B. J. Coors. God didn't speak audibly, but He was saying, I sent the money so that you won't quit. It was "the signature of God."
Barbara and I came very close to missing a God-sized adventure of a lifetime—the privilege of seeing God use the FamilyLife staff team to touch millions of lives around the world.
